Artist Statement

My art is a physical representation of my experiences and how I view myself. I document memories and the change I see within myself through art. I deconstruct previous and current emotions to create paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Along with emotions, I look at old family photos to create a feeling of nostalgia within the piece, as well as physically using the images in drawings. For sculptures I use materials such as cardboard and old fabrics. When painting, I allow the brushstrokes to show throughout the piece. I work this way with these materials as it appears more handcrafted, and it shows my artistic identity throughout the piece.

For the past year, my subject matter has focused around stars, symbolizing renewal and transformation. In my sophomore year, I explored the idea of a prosthetic leg that acts as a birdcage. Using this idea, I created “Star Girl”, a clay doll with a cage leg used for collecting stars. I’ve now gone back to her story, adding “Star Baby”, a god-like figure within this imaginative universe. Along with “Star Girl”, I looked at reincarnation, without using religious context. I created what I believed rebirth would look like physically. With the use of abstract shapes, bright colors, and stars, I created a representation of the act of reincarnation. I plan to continue diving deeper into these topics, whether to combine them or find a final iteration for both.
